Brandon Miller had a night to remember on Thursday, as he was selected by the Charlotte Hornets as the No. 2 pick in the NBA Draft. But it was also a night that reminded him of a dark chapter in his life, thanks to Malika Andrews.
The ESPN reporter decided to mention Miller’s connection to a murder case that involved his former Alabama teammate Darius Miles and another man, Michael Lynn Davis. The pair have been charged with capital murder in the shooting death of 23-year-old Jamea Harris in January.
Miller, who has not been accused of any crime and has cooperated with the authorities, was reportedly asked by Miles to bring him his gun that night. Andrews brought up this detail and asked how it impacted Miller’s draft status and how teams evaluated him.
“Miller’s name did surface in court testimony involving a case where his teammate and another man, they’ve been indicted for capital murder in the fatal shooting of 23-year-old Jamea Harris in January. … How does this factor in, if at all, into how teams are evaluating him?” Andrews asked.

Quite frankly. It’s old news. Miller dealt with this during the season. Cooperated with police and his university. No charges were brought against him. So why no just celebrate the young man on this accomplishment of getting drafted?

The team’s general manager, Mitch Kupchak, said that they did a thorough background check on Miller, including a visit to Alabama about two weeks ago.
“We are comfortable with Brandon on and off the court,” Kupchak said, per The Associated Press.
Miller himself has said that he cannot talk about the case for legal reasons. He also said that he is focused on his basketball career and excited to play for the Hornets.
