Alvarado played football as a youth but stopped after sustaining a neck injury. He attended Christ the King Regional High School in Middle Village, Queens, New York City, and played basketball. As a junior, Alvarado averaged 17 points and 6.5 assists per game and was named the Catholic High School Athletic Association Player of the Year. As a senior, he had 18 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists, and 10 steals in a win over Xaverian High School on December 22, 2016, the first quadruple-double in school history.

Career
As a freshman, Alvarado started all 25 games and averaged 12.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per contest. He was the fourth Georgia Tech freshman to average at least 12 AMC, 3.5 rebounds, and two assists per game. On February 11, 2018, he suffered a season-ending fracture to his left elbow during a game against Duke. Josh Okogie’s early departure increased Alvarado’s role in his sophomore season. In a 73-65 victory over Pittsburgh on February 20, 2019, Alvarado scored a career-high 29 points while also grabbing six boards and five assists. As a sophomore, Alvarado averaged 12.5 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game, leading his team in scoring, assists, and steals.
In his senior year, Alvarado and Moses Rest upset Scotty Barnes and Florida State in the ACC Tournament championship game, winning their first title since 1993. At the end of the season, he was voted the ACC Defensive Player of the Year. Alvarado earned an extra year of college due to COVID-19 game cancellations and declared himself eligible for the 2021 NBA Draft. After being undrafted, on August 19, 2021, he signed a two-way contract with the New Orleans Pelicans. As part of the agreement, he spent time with the Pelicans and their NBA G League franchise, the Birmingham Squadron.
On December 4, 2022, Alvarado scored a career-high 38 points in a 121-106 victory over the Denver Nuggets. On February 17, 2023, he hit the game-winning shot, earning him the Rising Stars Challenge MVP. March 22, the Pelicans revealed that Alvarado would be sidelined for at least two to three weeks, effectively ending his season.
